Fadfada, in Arabic,
means “unburdening,” or “heart-to-heart.” The duo
weaves together Arabic classical compositions,
beloved popular songs, and original works, seeking
an intimate and deeply personal musical language
that spans the vastly different yet interconnected
lives of its two members.
At the heart of Fadfada are Nabil Arbaain, an oud
player from Damascus, Syria, and Hans Bilger, a
double bassist and oud player from Brooklyn, New
York. The two met when Bilger, fascinated by the
oud’s sound and history, enrolled in lessons at the
Arabic Music Institute Berlin, founded by Arbaain.
The term captures the essence of their collaboration
— a relaxed, candid, emotionally unrestrained
exchange of ideas and experiences. As Arbaain and
Bilger explored their respective heritages, a deep
bond formed. Arbaain’s oud playing, steeped in
Arabic classical music, combines with Bilger’s
background in American folk, jazz, and the
avant-garde: a sound grounded in the elegance of the
Middle Eastern canon and infused with the energy of
contemporary Berlin.
Through their performances and recordings, Fadfada
cultivates a sense of emotional catharsis and
connection, inviting the audience to partake in
their fadfada. By bridging
the cultural divides between Damascus and Brooklyn,
Arbaain and Bilger offer a testament to the binding
power of music.
Fadfada bedeutet auf
Arabisch „offene Aussprache“. Das Duo verwebt
klassische arabische Kompositionen, beliebte
Poplieder und Originalwerke zu einer intimen und
tief persönlichen musikalischen Sprache, die die
sehr unterschiedlichen, aber verbundenen Leben
seiner beiden Mitglieder widerspiegelt.
Im Zentrum von Fadfada stehen Nabil Arbaain, ein
Oud-Spieler aus Damaskus, Syrien, und Hans Bilger,
Kontrabassist und Oud-Spieler aus Brooklyn, New
York. Die beiden lernten sich kennen, als Bilger —
fasziniert vom Klang der Oud — Unterricht am
Arabischen Musikinstitut Berlin begann, das Arbaain
selbst gegründet hatte.
Der Begriff erfasst das Wesen ihrer Zusammenarbeit —
ein entspannter, offener, emotional freier Austausch
von Ideen und Erfahrungen. Arbaains Oud-Spiel,
Publikum an ihrer
fadfada teilhaben. Indem
sie die Grenzen zwischen Damaskus und Brooklyn
überwinden, liefern Arbaain und Bilger ein Zeugnis
der verbindenden Kraft der Musik.
